I’ve heard people say that they need to “stay in their lane” as if it’s a good thing, but these are extraordinary times with enormously complex problems. To stay in your lane will almost surely limit your effectiveness and hamper your success.

The most serious limitation is for transportation to be in a lane all its own. Because you need demonstrations for the public, pilot projects, and a groundswell of support, I suggest that you seek out cities with transportation officials who are open to this paradigm change, who share an inclusive philosophy, and who will do the work to create bonds of trust and mutual support.

One way is to reach out to people on different paths and discover the ways you can intersect and support one another’s mandates. If you are not naturally outgoing, if you let hurdles discourage you, it’s just going to be more difficult, but you can still do it.

Start an ongoing list of people and organizations working in each of the spheres that touch the above list. One by one, get to know them, and through that process, find those who want to build working relationships. Go to events outside of your professional field. Penetrate other groups. Recharge your curiosity. You only need a few allies to elevate what is a nonattainment problem into a broader tent where social equity, cost of living, public safety, public health, habitat protection, economic development, economic resilience, sustainability, and a host of convergent issues combine to build a stronger whole.

Change of this magnitude requires people with “a bedrock belief that change is possible, that people can radically transform their behavior or beliefs in the face of the right kind of impetus,” as Malcolm Gladwell writes.

If there are communities that have survived disasters, whether natural or economic, you will probably find that they are very receptive. You are providing them with another tool for recovery.

Listening is the key to building alliances. Listening is the key to achieving dramatic reductions in carbon emissions quickly. Listening to what matters to people will help you create a grassroots movement that will be unstoppable.
